my own ranking of every rick and morty episode, inspired by the lovely @fandomwe1rd0 :3

sorry this is a bit scattered, the random quotes are just lines that i liked/found funny. i had to shorten all my reasonings by a fuck ton bcs i was just going on forever lmao, so if some things feel kinda cut off, that's why.

i binged all of rick and morty in like a week to make this, just to make sure the ranking was fully accurate to me and it took me way to long but i'm finally done !!

btw this isnt a ranking of which episodes are objectively the best, its very biased and just my personal opinions, im aware some epsiodes definitely shouldnt be as high as they are but a lot of them are just my comfort episodes 🤷

f tier: episodes i actively dislike, have little to no redeeming qualities.

71. rickdependance spray: audibly said "oh, fuck no." when i realised this was next. the rest of weird-ish episodes have some redeeming points but this one just has no plot relevance and isnt very funny.

70. raising gazorpazorp: main reason i dislike this episode is the end credit, it reminds me of when i was listening to family line and my dad insinuated conan was making it up and that if i got famous i'd do the same, like, no, if i talk abt what a shitty dad you are its bcs you were a shitty dad, do better. anyway i just thought it was an unfunny joke. due to daddy issues. also its just a boring episode.

69. a rickconvenient mort: summer and rick's storyline was ok but not enough to make up for how much i hate planetina. i liked beth in this episode. rick and summer's dynamic was nice too, but unhealthy.

e tier: episodes i don't dislike, just find boring/have bad elements but more redeeming qualities.

68. m. night shaym-aliens!: the little crystal wrestle was adorable. other than that not a super memorable episode.

67. rise of the numbericons: the movie: i didn't hate it but compared to the rest of s7 it was pretty weak. i think mr goldenfold is funny, but not enough to get his own episode. it would've been more entertaining if rick was in it lets be real, i missed him.

66. interdimensional cable 2: tempting fate: i care very little about jerry's penis. the interdimensional cable was good as usual though.

65. how poopy got his poop back: fine episode, not my fav. i liked seeing bp and squanchy again.

64. edge of tomorty: rick die rickpeat: "Damn, Morty, you're bad at maths, but I'm giving you an a-plus in confidence!" an okay episode.

63. rick: a mort well lived: pretty weak episode to follow solaricks. summer's die hard was good. some cool emotional components.

62. rattlestar ricklactia: "Hey, Morty, listen. I can tell you're pretty upset about the whole snake encounter thing, so I'll tell you what. I'm just gonna go ahead and avoid you for the rest of the day." rnm were kind of cute at the end. yk, until rick punched morty in the face :/.

61. the jerrick trap: sorry ik a lot of ppl love this episode but tho burger & fries were cute characters its not all that for me. memory rick's return, however, was all that. i love him.

60. childrick of mort: "Oh my god, grandpa, you fuck boy." rick being a space nerd <3. loved to see more of beth and rick together but other than that this episode was kinda mid.

59. amortycan grickfitti: honestly made me feel bad for jerry which isnt easy, i sort of liked rick here, he seemed reluctant to let the hell demons make fun of jerry, he still did, but even apologised with only a little prompting. can't say the same for beth. summer and morty were sweet in this episode, i wish we would get more of them.

58. rickmancing the stone: "I don't know why I'm crying." "Well... try crying 15% less?" not bad, i liked the emotional components.

57. mortynight run: again, not super memorable to me. the roy montage was good. You kind of wasted your 30's, though, with that whole birdwatching phase." the animation for the song was great.

d tier: mostly okay to good episodes with minor faults that i can look past in the general scheme of the episode.

56. one crew over the crewcoo's morty: fucked up what rick did to morty. and to mr pb, his life went to shit after this, bcs of rick.

55. night family: had some great moments, but wasnt my fav.

54. anatomy park: loved dr bloom, john oliver voiced him perfectly.

53. lawnmower dog: sweet scenes between rnm. liked the dream inceptor, loved scary terry, snuffles was good too but not as much.

52. claw and hoarder: special ricktims morty: "Are you gonna slay it?" "First off, i always slay it, queen. Secondly, yes." summer being on morty's side was nice. while the soul orgy was a bit weird, the rest of this episode was pretty entertaining which is why its higher up, sorry.

51. bethic twinstinct: jerry saying he would khs, not cool jerry fuck you. "You ladies discuss responsibility while i get stoned and play video games with your kids." the end 💀 i felt bad but it was funny lol.

50. final desmitation: maybe my fav ep of jerry and rick's relationship. i liked seeing rick disapprove of them making fun of jerry, had some funny moments and i even liked jerry here.

49. a rick in king mortur's mort: not the best but i enjoyed rickbot being nice to morty. also this episode sets up for rmrm which i love.

48. promortyus: morty's little yee-haw 😭. and their conversation, so sweet. taking the adderall line as an adhd rick confirmation. "It is my thing. Just like yours is dying alone," get his ass. i feel like the romance couldve been a compelling story if the hosts werent rnm.

47. the whirly dirly conspiracy: rick's take on jerry was accurate. "But no, like father like goddamn daughter! You wanna be like Rick? Congratulations, you're just as arrogant and just as irresponsible!" morty ate. i prefered summer and beths storyline to rick and jerry's.

c tier: solid, episodes, some have a few faults but theyre small

46. mort: ragnarick: it's so high up because i found rick to be likeable and liked his dynamic with morty. ricks clone was cute too.

45. look who's purging now: "Screw you, Rick! I'll purge you too, you old rickety piece of crap!" rnm's storyline was great, i liked arthrisha.

44. the ricks must be crazy: "I dropped out of school. It's not a place for smart people." "Ohhhh, snap!" lmao literally my reaction. "Ooh. Wow. Gaaay!" "That is pretty gay." not much more to say, good ep.

43. never ricking morty: rnm were sweet in this ep. the gay ass song with rick and bp. "Rick are you– do you need to go to the hospital?" the forehead kiss was sweet. (we're ignoring "Lips if you want.")

42. mort dinner rick andre: mr nimbus is a great character. the wine storyline was a bit boring. "I havent been to a full week of school in years! I don't know shit!" love the peek at rick's backstory too.

41. rick potion #9: important lore episode. some funny bits. morty was a little creepy in this one. i love jerry primes character development. first look on down from the bridge moment !!

40. forgetting sarick mortshall: "What are you, eight? Is this macaroni art? You expect me to believe you built this because you don't care?" liked ricks storyline and he actually does seem to be showing minor development. the end song was good. liked garbage goober's lore.

39. morty's mindblowers: rick removing whatever memories he wanted was fucked up. rick saying granite instead of granted will always be funny. also him losing in chackers and skiing into a tree.

38. mortyplicity: entertaining enough if a little convoluted, i liked it though. sweet moment between the decoy family, shame they died.

b tier: good to great episodes.

37. big trouble in little sanchez: actually liked jerry and beths storyline in this one. tiny riiick !! "old rick! ruining everything!" good episode.

36. pilot: good intro, sets the tone. rick is such a dick (affectionate). rnm's dynamic !! the animation is great. overall great episode.

35. pickle rick: ik its a overrated but i think its good. hes pickle riiiick. dr wong's speech to rick was actually really good and accurate.

34. meeseeks and destroy: rick was such a whiny bitch this episode (affectionate), up until the mr jellybean stuff, which i liked bcs it was handled well by the writers and rick was actually very sweet.

33. rick and morty's thanksploitation spectacular: president curtis' alcoholic sci-fi boyfriend is probably my favourite way rick has been refered to in the show LOL. overall i enjoyed this episode.

32. something ricked this way comes: idc now but, the first time watching rick's r slur speech it was obnoxious and offputting. summer and rick were great, i adore their dynamic, love summer and rick episodes, but idrc for jerry's storyline, he bores me so bad.

31. full meta jackrick: "Rick can't change, Morty. Change is what you might call his Kryptonite." there were a lot of things i liked abt this ep.

30. vindicators 3: the return of worldender: very good episode. forever a believer that the ride was for morty and rick just chickened out.

29. a rickle in time: the va for the testicle monster was great. beth and jerry's storyline also wasn't bad. rick jumping into the hole and sacrificing his life for morty, im sobbing. great episode.

28. the vat of acid episode: morty trying to make rick feel better about not being able to make the thing was very sweet. morty's relationship with that girl was adorable, so sad it was erased by jerry's dumb ass /lh. fuck rick in this episode. the end was funny.

27. rixty minutes: while i do love interdimensional cable this episode would've been lower if it wasn't for all the character moments. "You can't leave, you're 17." "Yeah, and I'm not pregnant. I'm gonna have better judgement than you guys had at my age." loved summer getting screentime. beth and jerry's moment was quite sweet.

26. ricksy business: bp and squanchy !!! >:) bp coming through with the deep speech. the montage of rick morty and summer at the end is so adorable i love them sm <3. "I love my grandkids." "Aw :)." "Psych, just kidding, my new catchphrase is i dont give a fuuuck!"

25. get schwifty: first president curtis episode !! i love him. love morty and bp interactions haha. "In bird culture, this is considered a dick move." "It is random debris. I found it in my carpet. I don't know what humans eat." crying i love him sm. one of my personal favs lol :).

24. juricksick mort: tbh i mostly like this ep bcs of "You pompous autistic cadaver!" but there was other good moments and it was entertaining. rick was funny and likeable and very much a disaster of a human being, as i was promised when i started watching rnm.

23. star mort rickturn of the jerri: space beth !! "You cosplay as your shitty father in his 30's." "Its funny. I always wondered who would win if we ever fought." "Then you were always a bad friend." :(. "Holy shit, I'm a terrible father." i forgot how good this episode was, very angsty.

22. total rickall: genuinely love this episode. KEITH DAVID >:D. rick's "weird made-up sounding catchphrases" compilation is one of my fav moments in the show lol, everyone looks so concerned 💀.

21. rest and ricklaxation: "Grandpa's here." SOBBING. "Because you kept drunk-dialing me and crying about it!" "I wasn't crying!" loved jessica and ricks dynamic lol. great episode.

20. rickfending your mort: great follow up to unmortricken, i like that rick doesnt just go back to normal and we see it takes a while and even then its only bcs morty steps in. morty making up titles for all their adventures is adorable. great sweet scenes between rnm.

19. the rickchurian mortydate: autistic rick !! also minecraft. the president is such a pathetic loser lol <3. i loved rick and morty being on the same wavelength in this episode. the ending was good.

18. wet kuat amortycan summer: summer-centric episode !! rick was likeable, liked seeing him clumsy getting his grove back. him saying summer reminds him of diane again, he's getting so much more open, im so proud, can you imagine s3 rick being sincere like that?

17. close rickcounters of the rick kind: best s1 episode, love citadel episodes. evil morty !!!!! some funny moments. "You're crying? Over a Morty?" sobbing. "Yeah, but wheres the transmitter?" and the evil morty song oh god, best scene ever fr. i love my evil guy :3.

s tier: outstanding episodes, the 16 best imo.

16. that's amorte: FANTASTIC episode, the end montage is the only part of any rnm episode thats made me cry a little, it would be higher up but i have some personal favs which i put higher. i feel like this episode was very classic rnm after having them separated half of s7.

15. the old man and the seat: jerry and morty's dynamic is pretty funny. tony and rick's storyline was fantastic. some pretty angsty stuff. "The saaaddest piece of garbage in the entire cosmos."

14. the abc's of beth: rick and beth episode !! rick saying that an adventure clearly needs morty in it, aw. i did not care about jerry's storyline at all. beth had no right being so relatable in this ep.

13. ricktional mortpoon's rickmas mortcation: rick relapsing into finding prime !! "I'm not touching that thing. I'll get neurotypical cooties." ok, so ik a lot of ppl don't like the speech rick said to morty, but i do, he was going through a LOT, this clearly took him quite a few steps back in development and healing, i think it was less bad than a lot of other things he's done and way more justified.

12. fear no mort: loved morty getting his time to shine, LOVED diane and rick. morty realising rick wasn't in the hole has to be one of the best moments in the show. rick not going in the hole at the end bcs morty told him not to, hope some day he'll get to the point of doing things for morty in front of him so he can realise how much he cares.

11. analyze piss: look at rick asking dr wong for advice. him relating to piss master :(. also i read a phenomenal fic abt this ep (tw sh) (link).

10. air force wong: UNITY RETURNS! Rick was kinda childish in this episode but i feel like it was justified, he wasn't being a dick just bcs, he was hurting, and he even kinda apologised to summer, hes trying. rick going to drink with the president instead of being alone.

9. the rickshank rickdemption: RICK PRIME. "That, diane, is the last great idea that will ever be had in this garage." :((((. ricks backstory. "he's not a villan, summer, but he shouldn't be ur hero." fantastic ep.

8. rickmurai jack: love two crows rick. rick's full "crybaby" backstory !! "Now you're evil morty, too. sooner or later we all are. on this side of the curve." THE END OH GOD. THE MUSIC. EVIL MORTY LETTING OUT A SIGH OF RELIEF. INSANE finale.

7. gotron jerrysis rickvangelion: rick is so spectacularly autistic in this one. i like how he doesnt silly hyperfixtate, he full on unhealthy hyperfixtates. i practically know this ep off by heart. comfort ep fr.

6. rickternal friendshine of the spotless mort: im not sorry for putting this up so high, i love this ep so fucking much. memory rick is so silly i love him sm. "You were a good friend, Rick. Goodbye." the blood ridge confession makes me FERAL. i can quote it word for word.

5. the wedding squanchers: THIS EPISODE. rick watching bp die in front of him. rick turning himself in :(. "everyone i know goes away in the end." the music was so good. "he's not coming back, is he?"

4. the ricklantis mixup: best citadel ep, fight me. j-22 trying to save simple rick only to suffer the same fate :(. slick jumping into the wishing portal. the ending was phenomenal, every single storyline was amazing and important. and evil morty returns.

3. auto erotic assimilation: love unity and ricks dynamic. blim blam humbling beth and jerry. jerry using the weed whacker right in front of the garage where rick just attempted. and no one notices. bc that's how it is. "do you feel it?" is a great song. maybe this ep is higher than it should be but it's my comfort ep, it means so much to me.

2. solaricks: first time we get to see dimension c-137 out of a flashback !! "I hope Summer knows what happens to the people you love!" "Oh, am I cool enough for you now? Well, that was easy. It only cost me fucking everything." "I don't know him. You're my grandpa, rick." rip jerry prime, my fav jerry. THIS EPISODE IS PHENOMENAL.

1. unmortricken: ok anyone who knows me knows this is my fav ep bcs i never stfu abt it. i mean, evil morty backstory, rick beating prime to death, GOD. ian cardoni was COOKING with the delivery of those lines, and the lines were fantastic. some good rnm moments. the angst is so good. "How's it feel? Better? No? Exactly the same? Yeah, it always does." best look on down from the bridge moment.

i keep going over this a million times just to make sure everything is perfect but idk, some episodes are maybe interchangeable, im just going to post it bcs its been rotting in my drafts for quite a while now, everyone promise you dont hate me for putting an episode 1 slot too high or low /j

 So i match you with...................... Mitsuhide

The first time you meet this sneki boy, you were quiet and reserved. War council had just ended and you were named as a princess of the Oda forces. You were super socially awkward, and anxiety was slowly starting to creep in, as the curious warlords started to surround you. It wasn’t until Mitsuhide had pulled you away in a teasing manner to save you from the crowd that you finally started to calm down. He had noticed this new little mouse had been on edge since arriving. However, he didn’t suspect you of being an assassin or spy as, during the whole council, your hands shook, and you could barely speak up against Nobunaga’s demanding and commanding tones. 

Mitsuhide had found you incredibly amusing from the first moment you walked in, you caught this foxes eye. He didn’t know if it was the innocence or naïve purity that just seemed to radiate from you, but for some reason when he was looking at you, he found that he simply couldn’t look away.

It took all of one day for all the warlords to officially drop all suspicions of you. You were just such a sweetheart how could they not instantly love you and feel the need to protect you. You had started helping a few of the maids that first morning after you were named princess. You didn’t want to be a freeloader, so you worked hard to earn your keep and soon, the maids were fighting over who would get to work with you cause all of then just loved and adored you so much. 

You got annoyed with Hideyoshi when he first found you helping the maids, as he was 100% started micromanaging you. You lost you cool and raised your voice at him, TBH Hideyoshi didn’t think anything of it, but it wasn’t until you had pitched up at his manor an hour later to apologize for being so rude to him that he realized what a sweet and sensitive person you truly were. Of course from that moment onward you had gained yourself a big doting brother.

All the Oda forces agreed that you were too sweet and naïve for your own good, so Mitsuhude was assigned to give you princess lesson to prepare you for your new life as Oda princess. You were super excited when Mitsuhide had told you that he was going to teach you a variety topics such as economics, politics, history and self-defence. You even managed to impress the sneki boy, by getting all the questions correct on the first test he had handed you. You had found that first test incredibly easy as you were a bit of a history buff, and all the questions had been based on Nobunaga’s history. This low key shook the sliver kitsune a little bit, as this proved that not only were you pure and naive but you were also super smart. You kind of reminded him a little bit of Mitsunari, a cleaver professor with their head in the clouds. 

Mitushide praised you for your ability to pick up on concepts quickly and work diligently as a student, “I dare say little one, you are the best student a teacher could ask for.” You spend masses amount of time with sneki boi, and through that time you realized just how sweet Mitsuhide truly was, although he was a massive tease leaving you a blushy mess almost every day after lessons with his teasing comments. And naturally, the more time Mitsuhide had spent with you, the more in love he fell. It was also noted by the fellow warlords that, Mitsuhide always wore a soft gentle expression when it came to you, and in your experience he had been a kind gentle patient teacher. SO naturally you found yourself more and more drawn to this mysterious man.

Through all the time spent with the kitsune, you found yourself opening up more and more. He was one of the few people that got to see your playful side. You now would make the puniest, corniest jokes he has ever heard, leaving this kitsune in a fit of laughter mid-way through a lecture. Not only that, but he loved loved loved your competitiveness side. 

This side of you slowly started to surface after the 3rd or 4th self-defence lesson when you started challenging the kitsune to rematches whenever he would pin you down, ultimately beating you in your little makeshift sword fight. Boy oh boy, don’t even get me started on the shooting lessons, once you were able to fire the rifle, you were straight-up challenging this boy, the best marksmen around to a shoot-off. “Come on Mitsuhide, the first one to get 100 bulls-eyes in a row wins, and the loser has to buy tea.” Needless to say, you always lost and even though every day you would make that exact bet, Mitsuhide would always insist on sticking you for tea and lunch as reward for being such a good student. 

He really enjoyed spending time with you and would absolutely insist on holding your hands whenever the two of you were on your way to the tea house together after your lessons. “I can’t have my clumsy little mouse tripping and falling now can I.” Every day without fail, he would say that to you as he wraps his big hand around your small one, while leading you to your favourite tea house.

The two of you would talk about everything and anything over tea, these topics ranged from you making stupid jokes, to talking about random topics such as philosophy and psychology. Either way, Mitsuhide loved to spend time with you. He would always listen to and hang on to every word you said, storing every word in his memory. 

You were his precious little mouse, and he knew you were an extremely sensitive creature. If anyone dared say a single bad word to you or make you sad, they would face the wrath of this very protective kitsune. Like one time, one of the visiting daimyos had talked down to you for accidentally bumped into him. You were busy cleaning the windows when you accidentally lost your balance and bumped into him. He was so disgusted that a mere maid had touched him. He started yelling at you and insulting you, this escalated to such a point that he even had his hand raised ready to hit you for getting dirty window water on his shoes. That’s when sneki boi decided to intervene. Mitsuhide legit stood protectively in front of you with his rifle pointed at the man’s heart, with the full intention to shoot. “Golly me it appears like you are quite the troublesome little mouse, my dear.” He then turned his sharp gaze towards the daimyo “I do suggest you apologize to the Oda princess, lest you want to answer for your crimes directly to Nobunaga.” The man simply scoffed and walked away. Mitsuhide then turned to you and enveloped you in a warm hug while kissing the top of your head, “Are you alright, my dear little mouse?” Mitsuhide looked into your beautiful eyes and gently took your hands in his, “Come little one, I have something I wish to show you.”

The two of you walked hand in hand to Mitsuhide’s manor, Mitsuhide led you out into his garden, where you saw something so beautiful you could cry. The garden was filled with flowers and candles and in the centre was a table set up, with a feast laid out op top of it. 

Mitsihide had told you that night that he was hopelessly in love with you. He was overjoyed when he had discovered that you like him, was also a hopeless romantic and that you had an incredibly poetic, romantic way with words. You handed him a letter in which you had expressed your feelings for him in the form of a beautifully written poem. You were actually intending to leave the poem on his desk as a way of confessing your feelings. This instantly melted sneki bois heart into a giant puddle and he couldn’t help but pull you in for a sweet kiss. 

After diner Mitsuhide had led you deeper into the garden where a fluffy blankie was sprawled out on the grass, he guided you to sit down and the motioned for you to lookup. Above you, a thousand stares were shooting across the sky in a big meteor shower. Mitsuhide pulled you into his arms and kissed your cheeks as the two of you watched the sky. He always remembered every detail you had told him about yourself, so when you revealed that you loved the sky and the stars, he knew he had to incorporate this rare meteor shower in your date somehow. 

This had sparked a new tradition between the two of you, to stargaze and spend the whole night in deep conversation. These nights were full of love and affection as Mitsuhide would pull you into his lap and just hold you there for hours and hours as the two of you talked and watched the sky

Of course sneki boi also had a bit of a spontaneous side, and would take you on exhilarating trips around Nobunaga’s territories. They were mostly missions but after you had nagged Nobunaga to give you permission to go along on the missions, you and Mitsuhide would finish the official work asap so that the two of you cuties had plenty of time to enjoy yourself in the new environment.

Mitsuhide loves everything about you from your slight messiness, to your love of learning new things. He also knows that his sweet little mouse sometimes needs some space and alone time and will be sure to give you as much alone time as you need to recharge. it’s like a funky lil Matter Of Interest to kind of discover things that i might be good at like, theoretically.........there’s a fair handful of things i’m pretty decent at but like, the Knowledge doesn’t go too far and with zero sense of “yes i can pursue this” it’s all still so theoretical but it’s like “hm wonder what alternate timeline me’s are up to” kind of lol

i’ve totally got the heart of a physicist, and also i love math and i’m alright at it though sometimes it gets tricky b/c with math sometimes you’ve got to learn something without necessarily understanding the fundamentals and then later on / upon learning something more you come back around and Get it finally, but Often i need to feel i grasp those fundamentals......but i’ve still been able to do fine in that Higher Math realm so probably it’d be not that much of a problem. i didn’t go Too advanced in either physics or math but like, i know i like them a lot and i get riled up abt topics in these fields the way physicists and mathematicians do. idk if i’d like chemistry maybe too, but yeah physics and math

i’m good at languages actually and always want to learn but god knows this is more for myself than like, oh i’ll be able to become fluent and become a translater / interpreter, b/c that’s not going to happen but i like to Know anyways. combine this and the above and it’s like would i be good at programming? i don’t know because hilarious i only took one Intro To class for like, a week and a half b/c without the suggested prereq i was already like oops i don’t know what i’m doing! it’s not as good as the time i went to this class for like three days and was so detached that i cannot now remember what the class even was. but the brief initial taste of coding was like ohh i might like this. but that’s all i have to go on so it’s very theoretical and i’m lucky if i can remember the html for a hyperlink

i was kinda into art history and i’m Interested in history-related stuff in general but i’m interested in many things so this doesn’t mean a ton and i’ve rarely had the motivation to pursue much here so idk just an interest

speaking of just an interest i sure like birds but what do you do with that. i’ve generally been an “interested in animals” person but that’s always shifted like oh dinosaurs oh birds oh dolphins oh idk should i be a farm vet? what can i even do with the fact i think birds are really cool. Not Much. i just think they’re neat

i’m alright at cooking and i like it. but i’m also alright at transcribing and i like it. just things i like to do, really. like sort / organize things even though i’m not an organized person at all

oh i mean people know i sort of like to draw and that’s something i’ve kept up but i’m not exaggerating when i say that the way i use it now, aka occasional fanart for exactly whatever purely self-indulgent thing i wanna draw re: my Interests, is the only way i use it lol. i guess it makes me Creative but i’m not ~original~ b/c i’ve for real Never been someone who has Original Ideas. i’ll totally own it if that makes my drawing abilities Not Real or i’m not Good Enough or whatever like, people always seem to have this notion that everyone has Original Stories inside them and it’s a matter of practice or confidence or whatever, but i just don’t think that’s necessarily the case that the only way people can express themselves / create / live their Truest Existence is through original stories and inventions or etc. that’s just not relevant to me and if that’s a waste of my ability to draw (and very occasionally write-ish) then like, that’s just how it goes! nobody was entitled to it in the first place and i don’t consider any of my interests or what i do for myself a waste.

i always forget things about myself like that i practiced ballet for eleven years and was actually getting fairly good at that too.......since i had no experience w high school theatre, that was my sorta parallel experience w stage / dramatic productions and actually i thrived and had a great time and also had that parallel experience being a tenor who was always having to sing quieter despite their being like 3-4 tenors and 16 sopranos/altos and all in all i should’ve picked up on being a theatre gay sooner but here we are. probably would’ve had fun with it in high school maybe possibly!! but i didn’t go to high school and then i didn’t have the Experience for the college productions and now here i am today

probably the idea that you need to figure out your one true passion is kind of code for “build your career in capitalism” but still it’s like hmmm if i Was going to get to pursue that Interest i wonder what i’d like to do. i can really throw myself into things sometimes so it’s chill to think of like, yeah what if i got to like, do something i was really into and then be getting the results of that and getting to continue. sounds wild!!! and idk what it’d be which is why it can be a bit neat to wonder about

A/N: tbh I wrote this at 10 pm and its a mess with hidden svt lyrics and memes. I thought abt memes and suddenly here’s a Vernon one shot. also have you seen vernon’s isac archery pics? really damn fine whoops.

Summary: Feelings are hard to deal with and Vernon tries to put them in the right direction by confessing to you. 

Most of the time, Vernon would tell himself that things would go smoothly. That last math test? It went fine. Avoiding responsibilities? That went fine. Sleeping in class? That went fine. But when it came to the topic of you, his brain couldn’t function properly. He really, really liked you. Sometimes he did strange things -the rhetorical equivalent of splashing in a pool- to get your attention. Blasting ‘Careless Whisper’ on his saxophone in band class was arguably the best of many. Not only did he get your attention, but he also embarrassed himself for the rest of the year.

Yesterday he barely managed to ask you over to his house. Barely. Before he called you on his cell phone, he had to watch Shia Labeouf’s infamous ‘Just Do It’ motivational speech to give himself confidence (twice. He watched it once more for good measure).

Vernon’s palms were sweaty as he dialled your number. He was so nervous, and he felt like vomiting the spaghetti his mom made for dinner. Slowly, he brought his phone to his ear. It took a few rings until you finally picked up.

“Hello? Is this Vern?” Vern. He loved that nickname. No one else called him that, only you did. It was your endearing nickname for him.

“Yep, it’s me.” Vernon took a deep breath. He tried to sound as calm as possible, but his breathing was slightly shaky.

“Wanna swing by my house tomorrow?”

Your response was practically instantaneous. “Of course! I’m free tomorrow. What do you have in mind?”

“Just chillin’ I guess. We could watch some YouTube videos too.”

“Low budget Netflix and chill?” you laughed. Vernon loved it when you laughed, it was music to his ears. It was so pure.

“I’m literally only seventeen and have a few dollars.” He chuckled in response and delivered his catchphrase.

The short phone call ended after you both exchanged your “see you tomorrow”s.  Vernon dropped to his bed, cheering happily. His heart was bursting with excitement. His entire body felt fluttery.

‘Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow,’ he kept repeating in his head with a stupid grin on his face.

It was Saturday, and Vernon woke up early to prepare for today. Usually, he’d need morning calls or an alarm to wake him, but he was too excited for what could happen today. He searched the internet on what he should wear, what he should say and several other topics revolving around crushes and whatnot. He even read some books for advice. Practised some lines he’d include in his confession. He was going to make his confession to you as perfect as possible. Memorable and heartfelt. Vernon even went as far as asking his mom how to confess to you.

“Mom, how do I confess to someone I like?”

“Everyone has their own way, Vernon. Just be original.”

“How?”

“You’ll find a way.”

Vernon couldn’t really ask any of his friends how to confess to you because all of them were single. And so was he, unfortunately. Maybe today will be the day he will change a friendship to a relationship. But one question stood in his way:

How could he make his confession original and meaningful?

There was a girl at the front of his house. It was you, looking pretty as always. Vernon politely greeted you and took your jacket, putting it on a coat rack. 

“You look great today,” he said. A simple compliment. Was that considered flirting? Vernon had no idea. 

“Thank you! Vern, you’re looking very handsome today- why are you wearing shades in your house?”

He took off the shades. “Rhetorical effect.” 

“Like everything else you do?” you teased.

“You come into my house, and insult me? Wow. Get out of here.” Vernon responded in a joking manner.

“You wouldn’t be able to get me out of here, even if you wanted to.”

After playing a few rounds of Super Smash Bros (you absolutely creamed Vernon), browsing through a mass of We Are Number One videos, jamming out to 80s hits, and tragically attempting to rap to Drake songs, you and Vernon plopped onto a couch, side by side.

His mind was thinking, thinking of ways he could possibly confess to you. Did he want a cool approach? A subtle approach? A direct approach? As he pondered over this, he accidentally voiced his thoughts, “How do you tell a girl that you want to kiss her?”

‘Well, shit. This is fine.’ Vernon told himself. He stared at you, trying to configure if you heard him or not. Some part of him hoped you heard him, but at the same time, he hoped not. His mind was on fire right now, it felt as if he was going to be enveloped by his impending doom.

You blinked a few times. “Did I hear you correctly?”

“I don’t know.”

“Really? Come on man, what are you hiding?” you playfully gave Vernon a punch on the shoulder. “Are you harbouring feelings for someone?”

“In the way you put it, you make my feelings sound like something cringe-worthy.”

“Hey, it’s okay man. It’s a beautiful thing, liking someone. You catch yourself smiling when thinking about them, daydream more, and want their attention more… “ as you trailed off, your voice became quieter. Vernon was looking at you, somewhat in shock.

‘She does the same things I do when I think of her…? Wait, does that mean she, too, likes someone?’ he thought and sat up, listening to your words more seriously.

He broke the awkward silence. “You like someone too?”

“Yeah. Am I not allowed to like someone?”

“Of course you’re allowed to like someone. It’s just… ” ‘you should like me,’ his mind echoed. “Ah, nothing.”

More silence.

“So, you were saying you want to kiss someone, right?” you asked. 

Vernon nodded his head.

“Your first move should be to confess to them, I guess.”

Vernon took a deep breath. ‘This is it. All or nothing.’

“D-Don’t take this the wrong way, but…” he stuttered, stumbling his way through his words. ‘Focus, Vernon, focus! Don’t make a fool of yourself now,’

“But…?” you turned towards your nervous friend who was sweating from your presence.

“All I can think of is you. Every day. And every day… you drive me crazy. I do so many things to get your eyes on me… Finally, now I think I have your full attention.” he spoke slowly and deliberately, staring intensely into your eyes.

“Maybe you think of me as a friend, but… I like you.  And I… Want to be your boyfriend. I want to be the person who can mess with your heartbeat, the person who can be by your side, the one to hold your hand…” Vernon’s larger, delicate fingers inched across the couch to your unoccupied hand, gently grazing the middle of your palm. Soft pinpricks of electricity shot up your arm as his fingers moved in a circular motion.

“I hope you can understand just a little of what I am feeling.”

You smiled. “You’ve always had my attention since we became friends.”

Taking his hand and entwining your fingers in his, you moved in closer to Vernon on the couch. Vernon’s hazel eyes watched you curiously, flicking back and forth between your pink lips and heartfelt gaze.

“I like you too, Vernon.”

You embraced the boy, softly pecking him on his rosy pink cheeks. “Are you comfortable?”

Hesitantly, Vernon brought his hands around your waist. “Yeah, I’m just a little flustered and…Well, to be quite honest, I didn’t think I’d get this far.” he chuckled, his cheeks becoming redder and redder.

“Well, look at where you are now. Only seventeen, got a few dollars, and now, a girlfriend,” you replied back, finding his hands to hold again. 

“Speaking of not getting this far… There’s one more thing I want to do,” he said as he bumped his forehead upon yours.

“Shoot.”

“Do you… Do know how to kiss someone?”

“Nope, but that’s not going to stop me from kissing you.”

“Glad to know we’re on the same page,” he murmured as he tilted his head and leant in to close the little space between the two of you.
